Wedding Dress Timeline

Everything you need to know about how long it takes to get your wedding dress.  Deciding on your wedding dress should be done 9 to 12 months before your wedding, so you have time to fix any problems that can crop up.

Who would have thought buying a wedding dress would be so complicated?  It’s just a dress after all.  Well, if you are purchasing a dress off the rack, it is easier than if your gown needs to be ordered.

Give yourself at least one month to shop around for the right wedding gown.  Visit local bridal salons, check out some clothing stores or department stores that carry wedding dresses, and explore the Internet.  Explore remaking your mother’s gown or having someone custom make your wedding dress.

Once you decide on a dress, then you need to place your order.  Depending upon the dress you order you could wait anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to receive your wedding gown.  So, we are possibly up to 7 months now.

After you have received your gown, there may be alternations, so give yourself another month.  That takes our timeline to 8 months.

If you are having a formal portrait in your wedding gown taken before the wedding, you will need to add another month to the timeline—making it 9 months ahead.

And finally, you want some time in case there are mistakes in your order or problems with alterations, so add yet another month.

So, give yourself 6 to 10 months before your wedding to start your wedding dress shopping.  Take the time to shop around and you will find the perfect dress at the right price for you.
