Newspaper announcements are the most common method couples use to announce their engagement.  This public notice of the engagement is submitted to the newspapers where most of the family live. If the engaged couple’s family live in two different cities, then newspaper announcements should be in both city newspapers, for example. If the couple chooses, no announcement needs to be published in any paper.

The traditional way of making the announcement is for the Mother of the Bride to take responsibility, and make a formal announcement in the newspaper. A traditional announcement includes the full names of the couple (including any professional titles), city and province of residence (if not in the same city as the newspaper), the highest level of education achieved by the couple, and their current employment.

For example, Mr. and Mrs. William Smith of Winnipeg, Manitoba, announce the engagement of their daughter Susan Beatrice Smith to Dr. Tom Alfred Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Jones of Vancouver, British Columbia.  A June wedding is planned.

Miss Smith, a graduate of the University of British Columbia, is a cardiology technician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.  Dr. Jones was graduated from the University of British Columbia and is employed as a Doctor with Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.

One thing to be aware of is that no matter how you may choose to word your announcement, the newspaper has the final say.  In addition, like wedding invitations, the wording of an announcement differs if parents are divorced, deceased, or the couple makes their own announcement.  If you look under the resources section of this module, you will find a document called: Alternative Wedding Engagement Wording which will, of course, give you alternate wording for a variety of situations.  Look through your local newspaper to see more alternative engagement announcements for you to choose from, or a call to your local newspaper will give you other choices.

The next video will cover the Engagement Party Etiquette.
