Cost Saving Tips – Wedding Rings

We have covered some cost saving options in the previous topic on wedding bands.

The following article is an example of the content we have in our online wedding planning membership site HappyWeddings.ca under the heading of Wedding Rings. To learn more and get useful wedding planning tools for FREE, click here!

Here is our list of cost saving tips:

  • Buy 14k gold.  It is stronger and more scratch resistant than 18k gold, and you can get more metal or a better diamond with the money you save.
  • Shop.  Compare.  Shop some more.  Nothing will help you save money more than comparison shopping.  Consider not just high end jewellers, but pawn shops, antique stores, department stores and on-line jewellery sites.   Did you know Walmart is the #1 seller of jewellery in North America?
  • Consider some of the new metals like Tungsten Carbide, Cobalt Chrome or Titanium.  They are much lower in price than the traditional metals of wedding rings.
  • Synthetic diamonds are becoming more popular with the eco-friendly crowd.  We have all heard of Cubic Zirconia, but there is also Moissanite, created diamond simulates available from Diamond Nexus Labs,  and Russian Brilliants simulated diamonds.
  • BUYER BEWARE.  Cast bands.  Cast bands are rings that are cast in one size and cannot be resized.
  • When buying a real diamond, always have it appraised by an independent appraiser after you have purchased your ring.
  • Some diamonds have a small flaw in them, but once in the setting can never been seen.  This option allows you to purchase a bigger diamond for the same price as one without a visible flaw.

As always our certified wedding planners are available to guide you in your purchase, but your best bet is to take the time to do the research to work with a reputable jeweller.  Always check with the better business bureau before laying down your hard earned money.
