Wedding announcements have the purpose of announcing your wedding once it has taken place.  The announcement is sent to anyone that you want to inform of your wedding that was not invited to the wedding.  There is no obligation on the part of the receiver to give a wedding gift.

Often, your wedding guest list that you end up with is different than your original wish list.  It is appropriate to let those who didn’t make the final guest list know of your marriage with a wedding announcement, as well as those that live far away and could not attend, or those that you do not want to give an obligation of sending a gift.  It is a way to let those who weren’t invited know that you are thinking of them and they are important enough to you that you wanted to send them a wedding announcement.

Never send a wedding announcement to someone who received an invitation to your wedding.  Wedding announcements should include the day, month, year, city, and province where the ceremony took place.  They are printed on the same stationary style as the wedding invitations.

Wedding announcements are made ahead of time, and are mailed out the day after your wedding—usually by the Maid of Honour since the bride will be on her honeymoon.

Newspaper wedding notices are also prepared ahead of time, and are sent out the day after the wedding.  Check with your newspaper for their particular rules, but usually sending it to them after you are married is acceptable.  Newspapers need to be contacted at least a month ahead of time so you can make the arrangements for the marriage notice to be published.  Some newspapers have rules about photos or the amount of lead time they need before they can publish your announcement.  If you want to do a newspaper wedding notice, check with your newspaper for their requirements.
