What songs do you want played at your wedding? Do you want you or your guests to do a waltz, foxtrot, swing, butterfly, polka, macarana, chatisse, tango or line dance? What is the age group of the majority of your guests? You need to have songs that they can relate to, or they will not dance. If you don’t know how to dance these dances, you might decide a few dance lessons might be in order so you can dance them with your guests. Remember, most people have relatives who know these dances, so before you spend your hard-earned money on dance lessons, ask your family and friends to teach you.
Once you decide on the general reception music, that is the time to turn your attention to the special dances. Bride and Groom First Dance. Bride and her father. Groom and his mother. Maybe the Groomsmen will do a dance, or the bridesmaids?
It is becoming more and more popular for couples to perform a special dance for their guests at the reception. This is often a choreographed number that is a showpiece. I have seen the groom and groomsmen to a special dance. One wedding I was involved in had the couple do a traditional dance for their first dance, but the father and bride did a special choreographed number. It surprised all the guests, and the father was glowing all night with the praise he got from the guests.
Whatever you decide for your special dances, enlist talented friends and family to help you get it together, and have fun. And if that doesn’t work, enlist in a few lessons—you will be glad you did. Remember that the wedding reception is your celebration. Have fun and enjoy.
