Planning your honeymoon is a great way to relax from all your wedding plans. The tradition is that the groom and his family pay for the honeymoon because it was the bride’s family who paid for the entire wedding. Those days are gone, and today, couples usually pay for their own honeymoon. Sometimes, family and relatives will contribute to the honeymoon costs, but more and more, it is the couple who pays for their own honeymoon.
As you learned in the bridal registry module, some travel agents have a bridal registry available so guests can contribute the honeymoon costs. This might be an option that you will explore.
Honeymoon’s have been around since biblical times when a man was exempt from military duty or public service, so he could spend the first year of marriage “bringing joy to his wife”. In later years, the couple went on a ‘bridal tour’ with friends and family to visit relatives that could not attend the wedding. Today, a honeymoon traditionally starts the night of the marriage, and includes a vacation or trip where the couple often choose a romantic destination.
Although romantic destinations are still very popular with newlyweds, more and more couples are choosing more adventureous vacations with scuba diving, rapelling down mountains or white water rafting combined with an exotic destination. Other couples choose an urban escape with great nightlife, while others choose a historical tour.
